Benefits of Puppy Spay and Neuter

At TCAP, our experienced and caring veterinary team regularly provides pediatric spays and neuters. Due to the long-reaching health and social benefits, we are huge advocates for early pet (pediatric) sterilization. With major advances in veterinary medicine it has become possible to safely alter pets that at as young as 8 weeks of age so long as they are over TCAP’s 2lb minimum weight requirement. This means it is easier now more than ever to take advantage of the many benefits that come from spaying and neutering your puppy or kitten.

Benefits of Early Spays and Neuters

There are numerous health benefits that come from spaying and neutering a pet early in their life. Here is a quick list:

Health Benefits for Females
– Significantly reduce the risk of mammary cancer and uterine cancer
– Reduced risk of mammary tumors
– Eliminates the risk of mastitis from nursing
– Eliminates the risk of pyometra – a deadly uterine infection

Health Benefits for Males
– Reduced risk of prostate problems
– Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
– Male Cats – General increase in life expectancy when compared to intact cats
– Reduced tendency to engage in aggressive behavior

Benefits for the Community

Pursuing a pediatric spay/ neuter for a pet not only poses a health benefit for your pet, but also eliminates the risk of your pet having an unwanted litter. While, a litter of puppies or kittens can be very cute, finding homes for a whole litter is a demanding task, and this is how many animals eventually end up in shelters.

Amazingly, kittens and puppies are able to reproduce as soon as they reach their first heat cycle. This often occurs as early as 4 months of age for kittens and at around 6 months of age for puppies. Beating this first heat cycle is crucial to ensuring there is no chance that your pet will contribute to the homeless pet problem. This doesn’t mean that males get off scot-free!  Removing a dog or cats testes reduces the breeding instinct, making them less inclined to roam and more content to stay at home.

It is also important to note that pets have no qualms about reproducing with members of their own litter. If you are raising an unaltered litter of puppies or kittens, you will quickly have another pregnant pet on your hands if you do not intervene. A single litter of puppies or kittens can easily become several litters if action is not taken to stop the reproductive cycle.

Make the Commitment

Any veterinary professional knows that spaying and neutering is the most humane and effective way to combat pet overpopulation. A common reason people are unable to provide this important service to their pets is due to the cost of the surgery. As a nonprofit, TCAP seeks to overcome this barrier by providing the lowest cost spays, neuters, and vaccinations in North Texas. If you have any questions about sterilizing your pet or requesting an appointment at one of our convenient locations, give us a call at 940-566-5551 today! Together we can make a difference for people and their pets throughout North Texas.

Dog Spay and Neuter Near Me

Puppies and dogs are man’s best friend. Given the general love that dogs show towards anyone and everyone, it is easy to see why. Finding this kind of unconditional love is very rare, which is why it is so important that we protect our canine friends. The best place to start is ensuring that the dogs in our household are spayed and neutered.

If you live in North Texas, there is a good chance TCAP has a spay and neuter clinic location near you.

Spay & Neuter: The Big Picture

Spays and neuters save lives. This practice is widely regarded as the most humane and effective way to improve animal welfare. A single female dog can have anywhere from 8-14 puppies in a year. And female puppies can enter their first heat cycle as early as 6 months of age. As a result, a household with a pair of unaltered dogs can easily produce dozens of puppies in just a few short years.

The growth is exponential and there simply are not enough resources to care for every puppy born in the United States. According to the ASPCA’s national estimates in 2019 over 900,000 animals were euthanized in animal shelters due to overpopulation. This problem was only worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic in the years following as well.

Should I Spay or Neuter my pet?

Making a change starts at home. As a community, we can make a difference if we all commit to spaying and neutering the pets within our sphere of influence first. This will of course mean spaying and neutering pets within our own households, but also having conversations with friends, neighbors and family about the importance of spaying and neutering their own pets.

The problem of euthanasia is massive, and it can be very easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of effort it would take to make a dent. However, we firmly believe that a community of like-minded people, which are united in purpose, can accomplish anything.

TCAP Spays and Neuters

At TCAP, we do everything possible to remove cost as a factor in being a responsible pet owner. Dog spays and neuters cost anywhere from $55-$65. Sometimes our monthly specials will discount even those low prices. It is our mission to end euthanasia and improve animal welfare in North Texas.

Is There a Spay and Neuter Clinic Near Me?

If you live in DFW, chances are high that we have a spay and neuter clinic near you. Give us a call at (940) 566-5551 or visit our online scheduling page to book an appointment that will save lives.

Petco Love and Texas Coalition for Animal Protection Aim to Stop the Spread of Deadly Preventable Diseases Through Free Pet Vaccinations in Weatherford, Tx

As Part of Petco Love’s Initiative to Provide 1 Million Free Pet Vaccines, Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) Will Distribute Free Canine Distemper Vaccines

Weatherford, TX (October 7, 2022) – Texas Coalition for Animal Protection will provide free Canine Distemper (DAPPv) vaccinations for Weatherford area dogs. The free vaccines are made possible through Petco Love’s national vaccination initiative, which is providing 1 million free pet vaccines to its existing animal welfare partners, including Texas Coalition for Animal Protection, for family pets in need.

Parvovirus and distemper in dogs are some of the most prevalent deadly diseases impacting pets that are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care. To address this critical need, Texas Coalition for Animal Protection and Petco Love are partnering to make pet vaccines free and accessible in an effort to ensure the health and wellness of our beloved pets.

TCAP will offer free distemper vaccines for dogs every Friday at TCAP’s Weatherford location (1302 S. Main Street #114) between 10/14/22 – 11/25/22 on a first-come, first-served basis. All walk-in hours and event details are listed on TCAP’s vaccine calendar: https://www.texasforthem.org/hours-locations/vaccinations/.

Vaccines distributed through the Petco Love initiative will be the Canine distemper vaccines.

Petco Love helps our communities in so many ways. We at TCAP appreciate the opportunity to provide these essential vaccines at no cost to pet owners in our community,” said Stacey Schumacher, Executive Director of Texas Coalition for Animal Protection. “We urge community members to take advantage of this free resource to ensure the health and wellness of our community’s pets.”

“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented. It is further exacerbated when unvaccinated pets come into busy shelter kennels, where these deadly diseases can spread quickly, resulting in multiple deaths, skyrocketing expenses, and hindering saving pet lives,” said Susanne Kogut, Petco Love President. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these lifesaving vaccines, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.”

The COVID-19 Spay/Neuter Gap

The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting shutdowns throughout our nation have been tough on individuals, families, businesses, and the overall economy.  Though our country has mostly re-opened, we continue to feel the effects of the pandemic.  Most economists agree we will continue to do so for some time in many sectors, including the veterinary world.

Beginning in March 2020, some animal shelters and veterinary providers across the country closed their doors, while others reduced the size of their teams and service options. The length of these shutdowns and reductions varied, but the overall effect was a large decrease in the number of spays and neuters provided for community pets during this timeframe.

Historical Information Vs. COVID Pandemic

The availability of low-cost, high-quality spay and neuter providers has been shown to decrease the number of animals euthanized in shelters across the nation.  TCAP, joined by similar low-cost providers, helped reduce pet euthanasia in animal shelters nationwide from an estimated 13.5 million in 1973 to 1.9 million in 2019.

A retrospective study of patient data from 212 spay-neuter clinics using Clinic HQ practice management software was conducted from January 2019 through December 2021. This study found a decrease in sterilizations performed by 13% in 2020 and 3% in 2021. In total, just among these 212 clinics, the study found that 190,818 fewer surgeries were performed in the 24 months from January 2020 through December 2021 than would be expected had 2019 levels been maintained. If a similar pattern was experienced by other spay/neuter providers in the US, it would suggest there is a deficit of more than 2.7 million spay/neuter surgeries that animal welfare organizations have yet to address. When we consider that an unspayed female dog can give birth to 8-14 puppies each year and an unspayed female cat can birth 10-20 kittens each year, we begin to see the true impact of these shutdowns.

The Good News

At TCAP, our team was acutely aware of the problems that extended shutdowns could bring.  We committed ourselves to remaining open safely from the very beginning of COVID-19 shutdowns. This meant dramatically changing our operations and revamping our staff training. Through support from our leadership, staff determination, increased team work, and continued community support, TCAP increased our sterilizations performed in both 2020 and 2021 respectively.  In short, despite a nationwide pandemic, TCAP remained mission-centered and working.

TCAP is committed to ending euthanasia in North Texas, but we need your support to bridge the COVID-19 Spay/Neuter gap and begin to recover the lost ground in our fight to end euthanasia in North Texas. North Texas Giving Day is on September 22nd, 2022 and our goal is to raise $30,000 this year.

Pledge your gift to help North Texas Pets.

Tick Talk

As summer approaches and temperatures rise, tick activity will increase. They may be small, but ticks can cause a big problem for you and your pets. It is important to educate yourself on these pesky parasites and ensure your pets stay protected year-round.

What are Ticks?

Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of their hosts, which are often times dogs and cats. These pests can transmit a number of fatal diseases to your pets if not treated. Here in North Texas, the Lone Star tick, black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick are the most common species of tick.

Where Do Ticks Come From?

Tick-infested pets can easily transfer their ticks to any pets that come near them. Ticks often “hitchhike” into homes on other animals, on human clothing and shoes, and on infested bedding, furniture, and rugs. Ticks also live outdoors and can easily be transferred from yard to yard. North Texas provides a perfect environment for these parasites because these troublesome pests prefer warm and humid environments.

What are the Symptoms/Effects of Ticks?

If bitten, ticks can transmit a number of tick-borne diseases to your pet. These diseases include Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Babesiosis, Bartonellosis, and Hepatozoonosis. Several of these diseases can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms of tick-borne disease can include vomiting, fever, swelling around the joints, lameness, and lethargy.

How do I Prevent Ticks?

TCAP offers two options for low-cost flea/tick prevention during our walk-in vaccine events! We also carry a wider variety of brands on our online pharmacy. If your pet has been to TCAP within the last 12 months, you can order through our online store and have your pet’s tick prevention shipped right to your home. If not, come visit us during our walk-in vaccine events to start your pet on this necessary prevention.

Celebrating 20 Years of Success

2022 is TCAP’s 20th year of serving North Texas residents and their pets. At TCAP, we are proud of the team we have assembled, our accomplishments, and the valuable friendships we have made along the way. The work we do is vital and incredibly rewarding.  Please join us as we reflect on our two decades of service, and consider uniting with us and as we move forward into the future of providing affordable, high-quality essential pet care in North Texas.

TCAP is a 501(c)3 non-profit, that was founded by Stacey Schumacher in November of 2002. Stacey’s vision for TCAP was to end animal overpopulation by providing low-cost preventative services throughout North Texas. From the very beginning, Stacey knew that making spay and neuter affordable and accessible, she and her team could positively impact North Texas animal populations.   Fueled by this compelling cause, Stacey set to work at a single humble clinic in Denton. From there, TCAP and our veterinary team built a reputation in the Denton community as a competent, effective high-volume clinic. As time passed, TCAP began to spread our essential services to more communities in Dallas-Fort Worth and our reputation as subject matter experts grew. In the course of 20 years, TCAP has opened eight stand-alone clinics, has established and maintained a M.A.S.H-style travel program, and has set up a weekend vaccine event program that services more than 40 locations each year. TCAP, while not a full-service veterinary clinic, provides accessible and essential basic wellness services such as vaccines, microchipping, heartworm testing/ prevention, deworming, and flea/ tick prevention.

Since TCAP’s formation in 2002, TCAP’s dedicated veterinary team has been able to provide more than 630,000 low-cost spays and neuters. It is no exaggeration that the surgeons on TCAP’s team are some of the most knowledgeable and experienced in the world. In that same timeframe, the same TCAP veterinary team has provided more than 1,225,000 rabies vaccines. The impact that TCAP’s program had on animal welfare in North Texas cannot be overstated. With each spay/neuter, Team TCAP eliminates the possibility of a litter of puppies or kittens without a home.  With each low-cost wellness service provided, TCAP helps alleviate the cost of pet care for owners struggling to make ends meet. These efforts combined have resulted in keeping hundreds of thousands of pets in loving homes and out of animal shelters.

TCAP’s consistent, mission-driven commitment to animal welfare has allowed us the pleasure of partnering with like-minded groups of animal caretakers at city animal shelters as well as hundreds of animal rescue organizations throughout Dallas-Fort Worth. Our veterinary team is proud to be an essential component of this network of organizations all cooperating for the benefit of animals in our community. We are truly inspired by the passion and dedication our partners bring to the service they provide to our community. Our accomplishments thus far were made possible in no small part to the tireless work of our friends in the animal rescue and animal shelter industries.

As always, TCAP looks to the future of animal welfare throughout the North Texas area.  Despite all we have accomplished, there is still much more to do. We need partners who are just as passionate about ending euthanasia in North Texas as we are.   If you are interested in helping, there are many things you can do!
