Why Dental Health Matters
February is National Pet Dental Health Month and that gives every pet parent a perfect reason to pay extra attention to their furry friend’s smile. Most dogs and cats show signs of dental disease by the time they are three years old. Left untreated, dental disease can lead to painful infections, tooth loss, and even affect the heart and kidneys.
At TCAP (Texas Coalition for Animal Protection) we care about the whole pet, and that includes dental health. Just like you brush and floss your teeth regularly, our pets need dental care too. Tooth brushing at home helps, but nothing replaces a professional cleaning that removes plaque and tartar below the gum line where disease often starts.
Pets with dental problems may show signs you recognize like bad breath, yellow or brown buildup on teeth, drooling or dropping food, and red or swollen gums. But sometimes there are no obvious signs until the disease becomes serious. Annual dental cleanings are one of the best ways to protect your pet’s health.

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?
Pets are anesthetized under the supervision of a TCAP surgeon.
The plaque and tartar build up on your pet’s teeth are scaled and removed. Plaque and calculus are also cleaned out from below the pet’s gum line. This is the most important step, as debris below the gum line can cause periodontal disease.
The teeth are polished and treated with fluoride.
What Can You Do at Home?
There are a few things you can do at home to support your pet’s oral health in February and beyond:
- Brush your pet’s teeth regularly with pet safe toothpaste.
- Offer dental chews or toys that help reduce buildup.
- Check their mouth often for changes in breath or gum appearance.
Dental disease is common but mostly preventable when owners make dental care a priority. February is a wonderful reminder to schedule that cleaning or ask us how to care for your pet’s teeth at home.
